Nika is an enchanting 5-year-old dog who will win the heart of every dog lover with her charming personality and loving nature. Standing at approximately 57 cm tall and weighing 27 kg (a few kilos less would be ideal), she is a handsome mixed breed who was rescued from a kill shelter in Spain almost four years ago by an animal welfare organization. She initially found a permanent home in Germany, where intensive training was carried out for about 1.5 years. Nika knows basic commands and, as she walks well on a leash, is a pleasant companion for walks. Her affection for people is remarkable; she loves to cuddle and always seeks the company of her owners. Being left alone is also not a problem for her – she can be left alone for up to six hours without damaging anything or walking on furniture. Driving in a car is also not an issue for Nika, which underlines her flexibility.
With her herding qualities, Nika also brings with her several qualities that make her an attentive watchdog. She takes her job very seriously and often barks at other dogs and cats with great enthusiasm. Therefore, it's important to note that Nika doesn't get along well with cats and only gets along with very relaxed and defensive dogs.
Nika loves being petted – the more, the better! She doesn't like being combed so much, but we're working on it. She loves intellectual challenges and is extremely trainable, even if she sometimes has a mind of her own. To give Nika a sense of security and clarity, she needs a master or mistress who can help her relax and build trust. Unfortunately, this seems to have been somewhat neglected in her last home.
Overall, Nika is a wonderful dog with rough edges, waiting to find happiness in a loving home. She needs people who are willing to offer her the security she needs and to work with her to overcome her challenges.
For the past 2.5 years, Nika hasn't had the opportunity to continue training and has been kept primarily in a large garden in the countryside. Therefore, she isn't used to interacting with other dogs, traffic, or public transport. She has been in a new home since February
and has already made progress by reducing some of her fears and dominance gestures. However, it takes a lot of time, patience and experience in dealing with dogs to address their deep-seated challenges.
A home with a garden in a rural location would be ideal for Nika, as would a person who can spend plenty of time with her—whether at home or on excursions to the fields and forests. Regular training is also crucial to further her development. Unfortunately, we weren't as openly communicated about Nika's stubbornness as I am here. It has become clear that even beyond the acclimatization period, it is difficult, if not impossible, to treat her in a species-appropriate manner in our daily routine.
Every outing is currently very stressful for Nika, especially when we meet other dogs. Although we have already grown very fond of her, we have decided to look for a more suitable home for her. We believe she deserves an environment that better meets her needs and where she will receive the support she needs to continue to develop and be happy.
